DAKAR, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced on Saturday that the government will prioritize the livestock sector as a key pillar of its food sovereignty policy.

"Animal production generated nearly 847 billion CFA francs (1.36 billion U.S. dollars) in our country in 2023, demonstrating the vitality of this sub-sector, where significant progress has been achieved thanks to dedicated efforts," Faye said during the opening ceremony of the ninth National Livestock Day in central Senegal's Kaolack Region.

He highlighted the critical role of the private sector in ensuring the competitiveness of local products and the need for a sustainable production system that meets consumer demands.

The government, he said, will focus on diversifying production chains and called for the development of a comprehensive strategy, which would include controlled-origin certification and the promotion of 'Made in Senegal' products. Enditem
