COLOMBO, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government will introduce digital TV to free up spectrum space for the launch of 5G, local media on Sunday quoted Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne as saying.

He said that analog television currently occupies spectrum space equivalent to 26 channels, and transitioning to digital TV will significantly reduce this usage, freeing up bandwidth for 5G and other mobile communication needs.

The country's Telecommunication Regulatory Commission is undertaking a project to construct 276 towers to enhance mobile broadband connectivity and support the rollout of 5G. These efforts are crucial to advancing the government's plan to expand Sri Lanka's digital economy to 15 billion U.S. dollars, Weeraratne said.

The deputy minister added that the government has proposed the establishment of the Digital Economy Authority to oversee digitalization efforts across all ministries under a single authority.
