NIAMEY, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Niger's Defense and Security Forces (FDS) has said it lost five soldiers on Feb. 19 in a terrorist ambush in Sakoira in the country's western region of Tillabery.
"These attackers, hiding among the civilian population, opened fire on the FDS, causing the death of five soldiers," the army said Saturday night in its news bulletin broadcast on national television.
"Despite an immediate response, the air and land search operations did not allow the perpetrators to be located, who probably managed to blend in with the population," the FDS added.
Sakoira is located in the three-border region of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, a new hotbed of insecurity maintained in recent years by other jihadist groups. Enditem
