DAMASCUS, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Syria's interim Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Monday welcomed the decision by the European Union (EU) to suspend certain sanctions on the country, calling it a step toward alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people.

In a post on social media platform X, al-Shaibani stated that the Syrian government had engaged in diplomatic discussions over the past two months to push for easing "unjust sanctions" that have burdened the population.

"We welcome the European Union's decision to suspend some sanctions on specific sectors and view this as a step toward easing our people's hardship," he wrote.

On Monday, the EU eased some sanctions in such areas as energy, transport, banking, and exports on Syria in a bid to aid its recovery after the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024. Enditem
