SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's retail sales kept growing in January due to strong online demand for food, daily necessities and services, government data showed Tuesday.
The combined revenue among major offline and online retailers went up 11.7 percent in January from a year earlier, after rising in single digits for the past six months, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Revenue for online retailers jumped 14.6 percent last month, maintaining a double-digit growth for the 17th straight month since September 2023.
Sales by offline retailers climbed 8.8 percent in January compared to the same month of 2024, rebounding from a reduction of 0.3 percent in the previous month.
Food demand in cyberspace soared 19.6 percent, while online sales of daily necessities added in single digits.
Online demand for service, including travel, food delivery and e-coupon purchases, spiked 73.3 percent, but sales of home appliances, clothes and sports items in cyberspace declined in single figures.
Food demand in offline stores advanced 12.0 percent, while those for home appliances, clothes, sports items, daily necessities and services all increased in single digits.
Revenue among discount outlets and department stores posted a double-digit expansion, with sales by convenience stores inching up 1.7 percent last month. Enditem
