ANKARA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye's renewable energy installed capacity has reached nearly 60 percent of the total electricity capacity as of Sunday, according to a report by the semi-official Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

Based on data from the Turkish Electricity Transmission Company, Türkiye's total installed electricity capacity has risen to 116,605 megawatts. Of this, clean energy sources account for approximately 70,000 megawatts, Anadolu said.

The number of renewable energy power plants across Türkiye's seven regions has been recorded at 33,671.

Due to the country's growing population, expanding industrialization, and increasing energy demand, Türkiye has intensified investments in wind and solar energy. These efforts aim to reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, such as petroleum and natural gas, and to mitigate the country's current account deficit, said the agency.

Türkiye's solar energy installed capacity has reached 20,416 megawatts. Among these, 18,409 megawatts come from unlicensed plants, while 2,008 megawatts are from licensed facilities.

The share of solar energy in total installed capacity reached 17.5 percent, while its share in renewable energy capacity was approximately 30 percent. The number of solar power plants producing electricity was recorded at 32,083.

Meanwhile, wind energy capacity increased to 13,046 megawatts, with 378 wind farms operating across the country. Wind power accounted for approximately 11 percent of the total installed electricity capacity and 18.7 percent of the renewable energy mix. Among wind power plants, 287 were licensed, while 89 were unlicensed.

Hydropower continued to hold the largest share in Türkiye's renewable energy sector. As of Sunday, hydroelectric installed capacity, including river and dam-based plants, reached 32,203 megawatts.

Hydroelectric power accounted for 27 percent of the total electricity capacity and 46 percent of total renewable energy generation. There were 617 river-based hydro plants and 147 dam-based hydro plants in operation.

Other renewable energy sources include geothermal and biomass energy. Geothermal power capacity reached 1,734 megawatts, while biomass energy capacity was recorded at 2,123 megawatts. The number of geothermal and biomass plants stood at 66 and 380, respectively. Enditem
