TRIPOLI, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan Forensic Police on Tuesday announced the destruction of two tons of explosive remnants of war in the Al-Hira area, south of the capital Tripoli.
"The destruction process took place in the Al-Hira area, due to the availability of safety conditions to complete the process of disposing of this quantity safely," the Forensic Police said in a statement.
"It is noteworthy that this quantity was recovered by the Inspection and Explosives Disposal team from different locations in and around Tripoli over the past few months," the statement added.
Last month, the Libyan Forensic Police destroyed two tons of explosive war remnants in the city of Misurata, about 200 km east of Tripoli.
According to Fatma Zourrig, chief of the Mine Action Section of the UN Support Mission in Libya, more than 444 million square meters are still contaminated with mines and war remnants throughout Libya. Enditem
