YAOUNDE, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chad's ruling party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), has won a sweeping victory in the country's first Senate elections, winning 45 out of the 46 seats up for grabs, according to provisional results released Tuesday by the country's electoral body, National Elections Management Agency.
Eighteen women were among those elected, the results show.
Voting opened early Tuesday with a total of 124 candidates from 16 political parties participating in the elections.
The final results of the elections will be declared by the Constitutional Council.
Chad Senate, or the upper house of the parliament, has 69 members. The elections were held for 46 seats as 23 senators will be appointed by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.
The senators were elected for a six-year mandate. Enditem
