GABORONE, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Botswana and Zambia have discussed a plan to create an interconnector to enhance their energy cooperation, according to a statement issued by the Zambia High Commission in Botswana on Wednesday.

The project's goal is to build a high-voltage transmission line between the two countries to improve energy security and facilitate increased electricity trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

The statement was released following a meeting between Botswana's Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Kenewendo and Zambia's Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote on the sidelines of the SADC Sustainable Energy Week in Gaborone, Botswana, which is scheduled to run from Monday to Friday.

"There is a strong expectation from both the people of Botswana and Zambia for energy sufficiency. This regional interconnector will play a pivotal role in achieving our shared goals of energy security and self-sufficiency," Kenewendo said.

Chikote emphasized the importance of having a clear plan to accelerate the Botswana-Zambia interconnector. "We need to move swiftly to realize the benefits of this project for our respective countries and the wider region," he said. Enditem
