TOKYO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index briefly lost more than 1,000 points Friday morning, tracking declines on Wall Street overnight triggered by concern over U.S. President Donald Trump's high tariffs policy.

At 10 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average stood at 37,265.59, down 990.58 points, or 2.59 percent, from Thursday.

In the Tokyo stock market, a wide range of issues came under selling pressure after Trump threatened to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on imports from China and said his proposed 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods imported by the U.S. will go into effect Tuesday as planned.
