KATHMANDU, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit central Nepal on Friday morning, leaving one person injured and several houses damaged, a local official said.

The tremor hit at 2:51 local time, with the epicenter in Sindhupalchok district of Bagmati Province, said Ganesh Nepali, assistant chief district officer.

And the jolt was felt in Kathmandu, Nepal's capital.

A police office was also damaged in the quake, which sparked a landslide in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality of the district, Nepali told Xinhua.

"Despite a big tremor, there are no reports of huge losses yet. We are still collecting reports," he said.

He noted that panicked people left their houses and gathered in open spaces. Enditem
