JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Three children sustained injuries as a landmine left over from past wars went off in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province on Thursday, provincial police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hamad said Friday.

The incident took place in the Kotawalo area of Deh Bala district, the official said, adding that the police personnel reached the site of the blast and shifted the injured children to the hospital in Jalalabad city.

Without providing more details, the official noted that an investigation had been initiated into the incident.

The war-torn Afghanistan reportedly is one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world with dozens of people, mostly children, being killed or maimed every month due to the blasts of explosive devices left over from the past four decades of war and civil unrest. Enditem
