ISTANBUL, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Türkiye-Africa Media Forum was held here on Friday, addressing shared challenges through information exchange between Türkiye and African countries.

Hosted by Türkiye's Directorate of Communications, the one-day event brought together participants from both Türkiye and African countries in media and academia, focusing on fostering transparent information exchange, countering disinformation, and ensuring the spread of accurate information, according to the directorate.

Walid Ammar Ellafi, Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs of Libya's Government of National Unity, emphasized the vital role of media and communication in diplomacy and international politics.

In his opening remarks, Ellafi said, "These are essential tools for a country to protect its interests globally. We must use them to reflect the truth and defend our rights".

Ellafi also criticized the foreign press for misrepresenting Africa, especially regarding migration, which is often portrayed negatively without considering its root causes.

He highlighted the need to actively engage in the changing role of communication in ideological conflicts. "We must participate actively in this process," he added.

Gregoire Ndjaka, director of the African Union of Broadcasting, pointed out that migration is currently the most discussed topic in African media. "Unfortunately, the narratives about migration are often shaped by misinformation and negative stereotypes," he said, adding that a summit will be organized to present Africa's perspective on migration.

Fahrettin Altun, head of media and communications in the Turkish presidency, emphasized that, beyond the strong diplomatic ties, Türkiye will continue to build partnerships with Africa in trade, investment, education, culture, and military cooperation. Enditem
