RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese manager Renato Paiva has signed a deal to take charge of Botafogo, the reigning Brazilian and South American champions said on Friday.

Paiva, who had been out of work since parting ways with Mexico's Toluca in December, agreed to a contract that runs until December 2026, according to a statement on the Rio de Janeiro club's official website.

"It is with great pride and satisfaction that I arrive at this giant of world football," the 54-year-old told a news conference.

"I turned down several other offers because I didn't consider them worthwhile projects. This is a perfect match. We will not always be able to play well and win but I can guarantee that we'll be aiming to do that."

Botafogo had been without a manager since January, when Artur Jorge left to join Qatar's Al-Rayyan.

Paiva's first official match in charge will be an away clash with Palmeiras in Brazil's Serie A championship on March 29. Enditem
