NEW DELHI, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Five members of a family (a couple and their three children) were killed Saturday after the roof of their house collapsed in the northern Indian state of Punjab, police said.

The roof of the old house collapsed at around 4:30 a.m. (local time) in the village Pandori Gola of Tarn Taran district, about 28 km south of Amritsar, the Sikh holy city in Punjab.

According to the police, the family members were sleeping when the roof above them collapsed.

"Immediately after the incident, the locals carried out rescue work and pulled all of them from the debris. Though they were removed to the hospital, the doctors there declared them brought dead," a police official said.

The police said the house was in a dilapidated condition.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the incident. Enditem
