BAZARAK, Afghanistan, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snowfall and avalanche claimed the lives of two emerald miners in eastern Afghanistan's Panjshir province on Sunday, provincial director for Mines and Petroleum Mohammad Qasim Amiri said Monday.
The ill-fated miners were busy extracting the precious gem the emerald in Hisa-e-Awal district when the natural disaster occurred and killed both on the spot, the official added.
At least half a dozen people have lost their lives due to snowfall and avalanches in Afghanistan over the past month.
Parts of Afghanistan have experienced heavy snowfall and freezing weather over the past couple of days, which led to hours of closure of some highways linking the capital city of Kabul to the northern and central provinces of the country. Enditem
