ISLAMABAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan witnessed a sharp surge in civilian casualties across the country during the month of February 2025, according to a report released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) on Monday.

The report detailed that 79 terrorist attacks occurred last month, resulting in the deaths of 55 civilians and 47 security personnel, while 81 security personnel and 45 civilians sustained injuries during these incidents.

It is the first time since August 2024 that civilian deaths had surpassed those of security forces. Civilian deaths in February increased by 175 percent as compared to fatalities in January 2025, when 20 civilians lost their lives in such terrorist attacks.

In contrast, the deaths of security personnel fell by 18 percent from January when 57 security personnel lost their lives.

In response to the escalating threat, Pakistan's security forces have increased their counter-militancy operations by eliminating 156 terrorists, leaving 20 others injured and arresting 66 suspected terrorists.

The 66 arrests recorded in February have represented the highest monthly figure since December 2023, when 139 militants were detained, said the report.

The country's southwest Balochistan province emerged as the most volatile province, bearing the brunt of terrorist activities with 32 attacks followed by the northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which recorded 23 attacks. Enditem
