VIENNA, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Austria's gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 1.1 percent in real terms in 2024 compared to the previous year, as the country's economy continued to struggle with recession, Statistics Austria reported on Monday.
This marks the second consecutive year of economic contraction, making it Austria's longest period of weakness since relevant calculations began in 1995, according to Tobias Thomas, director-general of Statistics Austria.
Thomas noted that nearly all sectors experienced negative growth last year, with manufacturing, construction, accommodation, and food service activities being particularly affected.
Manufacturing output fell by 5.5 percent year-on-year in 2024, while the construction sector recorded a 4.4 percent decline.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, Austria's GDP decreased by 0.5 percent year-on-year, primarily due to the continued downturn in the manufacturing sector, Statistics Austria said. Enditem
