JAKARTA, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia will receive more than 3,000 tons of buffalo meat from overseas throughout March to bolster domestic stock, according to the country's National Food Agency.
The agency's head, Arief Prasetyo Adi, said the current stock is around 30,000 tons.
"In March, around 3,000 to 4,000 tons of buffalo meat will arrive," he told reporters on Monday.
According to the agency, the national average price of imported beef in the market is relatively high, at around 106,000 Indonesian rupiahs (6.4 U.S. dollars) per kilogram, exceeding the reference price at the consumer level of 80,000 Indonesian rupiahs (4.8 dollars) per kilogram.
Adi said that the government is targeting the price of imported beef to be in the range of 80,000 (4.8 dollars) to 100,000 (6 dollars) per kilogram.
However, he explained that the depreciation of the Indonesian rupiah against the U.S. dollar has affected domestic beef prices.
Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, is currently observing the holy month of Ramadan, during which prices for various food commodities, including beef and chilies, have reportedly increased. Enditem
