ANKARA, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye's foreign trade deficit widened to about 8.2 billion U.S. dollars in February, up by 20.5 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Turkish Trade Ministry on Tuesday.

The imports increased by 3.8 percent to 28.9 billion dollars, and exports dropped by 1.5 percent to 20.8 billion dollars, compared to the same month of last year, as reported by the ministry.

The decline in exports was attributed to harsh weather conditions and fewer working days compared to the same month last year due to the calendar effect, said Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat.

Türkiye's overall exports increased by about 2.5 percent in 2024, reaching an all-time high of 262 billion dollars. Additionally, the country's foreign trade deficit shrank by nearly 23 percent to 82.2 billion dollars last year, according to trade data compiled by the Trade Ministry in cooperation with the Turkish Statistical Institute.
