ALMATY, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Construction of four new reservoirs in Kazakhstan will begin in 2025, announced Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, at a government meeting, as reported by the Kazinform News Agency on Tuesday.

"In 2025, the construction of four new reservoirs in three regions of the country is planned. Among them, the Akmola, Kalguty (in Zhambyl Region), and Karaozek (in Kyzylorda Region) reservoirs are intended to address water shortages during the growing season for newly introduced irrigation areas covering 22,500 hectares," Nurzhigitov stated.

He added that the construction of the fourth reservoir, Bolshoy Ozen, in the West Kazakhstan Region is aimed at retaining flood and meltwater, thus eliminating the risk of flooding for two settlements in the Kaztalovsky District, home to approximately 5,000 people.

The minister recalled that last year, the ministry adopted two strategically important documents aimed at the large-scale modernization of the country's water management sector.

As part of the plan, the construction of 42 reservoirs, the reconstruction of 37 hydraulic structures, and the renovation of 14,000 km of irrigation canals are planned. Enditem
