YAOUNDE, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Chad has released the results of the country's first senate election, marking the end of an electoral calendar that began last year, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno said.

"The publication of the final results of the senate election marks the culmination of a historic electoral chapter for our country," the president said on social media after the final results of the senate election were announced Tuesday by the Constitutional Council.

The results showed that the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement has scored a sweeping victory in the senate election, winning 43 out of the 46 seats.

A political transition began in Chad in 2021 after Mahamat Deby, a former army general, assumed power following the death of his father, Idriss Deby Itno. The Central African country has since organized several elections to ensure a peaceful return to democratic rule.

"Six major elections were organized: referendum, presidential, legislative, provincial, municipal, and senate, thus testifying to the democratic vitality in our country," the president said, thanking the Chadian people for "having freely chosen their representatives at all levels."

In a decree published on Tuesday evening, Mahamat Deby appointed 23 people as senators, in addition to the 46 elected on Feb. 25, to form the first senate of the country.

Local media said Chad is now focusing on development projects after the lengthy electoral calendar. Enditem
