KIGALI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda on Tuesday received from the United States a fugitive convicted of taking part in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, authorities said.

In a statement, the National Public Prosecution Authority said Ahmed Napoleon Mbonyunkiza, 57, was tried and convicted in absentia by a traditional Gacaca court in Nyakabanda village in the capital of Kigali in 2007 for his role in the genocide.

He was deported after serving a 15-year sentence for sexual assault-related offenses in the United States, according to the statement.

The statement praised "the U.S. judicial authorities for their cooperation in deporting genocide fugitives and their contribution to the global fight against impunity."

About 1 million people, mostly of the Tutsi community and moderate Hutus, were killed in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi by Hutu extremists in a span of 100 days. Enditem
