NAIROBI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger service has transported over 14.8 million passengers between the capital, Nairobi, and the coastal city of Mombasa since its inception in June 2017.

In addition to the passengers carried by the passenger service, the SGR freight service has hauled over 3.018 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and 38.47 million tonnes of goods as of Feb. 28, according to a statement issued on Tuesday evening by Africa Star Railway Operation Company (AfriStar), the firm responsible for operating and maintaining the SGR.

"We have recorded 2,831 days of safe SGR operations. We continue to aim higher," AfriStar said in the statement.

Revenue from the SGR passenger train rose by 36 percent in the first nine months of 2024 despite a decrease in traffic, according to Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), the state corporation overseeing the industry.

The SGR generated 2.9 billion shillings (about 22.4 million U.S. dollars) during the nine-month period, up from 16.4 million dollars in the same period in 2023, KRC added. Enditem
