PRAGUE, March 5 (Xinhua) -- As part of the Slavkov format, the presidents of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria met on Wednesday to discuss cross-border cooperation, transport infrastructure, and regional developments.

Speaking at a press conference after their meeting at Slavkov Castle in southeastern Czech Republic, Czech President Petr Pavel said the leaders focused on practical cross-border assistance, such as in responding to natural disasters. They also discussed enhancing transport infrastructure and its modernization.

"It is not possible to think about further economic development or the strengthening of people-to-people relations without effective regional connectivity and integration with European infrastructure," Pavel said.

He added that the discussions also covered European Union (EU) affairs, international security, the situation in Ukraine, and Europe's relations with the United States.

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen emphasized the importance of unity in addressing security challenges. He highlighted how the three countries contribute to international cooperation and stressed the need for a strong and coordinated European response.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini noted that while ensuring peace in Ukraine remains a priority, Europe must also engage in direct and intensive discussions on the EU's economic competitiveness and global standing.

The Slavkov format was established in January 2015 to enhance communication between the three neighboring states, strengthen regional cooperation, and improve transport, trade, and security. Enditem
