CANBERRA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The number of offenders prosecuted by police over the past two years dropped to its lowest point since the time series started in 2008-2009, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday.

Australia recorded 340,681 offenders in 2023-2024, marking a two percent decrease compared to the previous year, said Samantha Hall, ABS head of crime and justice statistics.

The rate is now down to 1,430 offenders per 100,000 people, driven by a fall in illicit drug and public order offenses, with both categories reaching record lows for the time series, Hall said.

Illicit drug offenses have generally declined over the past eight years, with the offender rate at 202 per 100,000 people in the last two years, compared to 399 per 100,000 people in 2015-2016, she said.

Although the total number of offenders decreased, those involved in family and domestic violence increased to 90,697 in 2023-2024, up 3 percent from 2022-2023, which was largely due to a 4 percent rise in assault cases compared to the previous year. Enditem
