YAOUNDE, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Former Chadian Prime Minister Haroun Kabadi was elected president of the country's new Senate on Friday.

Kabadi was elected by acclamation at an inaugural plenary session of the Senate, as his candidacy was not contended.

"I am reliving today an experience that I had 14 years ago when I was elected president of the National Assembly. I am deeply touched," Kabadi said after his election.

"This is a great day for Chad, for its people, and for each of us -- a historic and memorable moment. We are entering history as the very first senators of independent Chad," the new Senate president added.

Chad held its first-ever Senate elections in February. The ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement won 43 seats out of 46. President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno appointed 23 others, in addition to the 46 elected on Feb. 25, to form the first Senate of the country. Enditem
