BUCHAREST, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Former Romanian presidential election front-runner Calin Georgescu officially submitted his bid for the country's presidency on Friday, according to the official Agerpres news agency.
Romania's political landscape has been reshaped recently since the country's Constitutional Court annulled last year's presidential election, in which Georgescu advanced to the runoff.
The ruling coalition has set the first round of the presidential elections for May 4, 2025, with a potential runoff scheduled for May 18, 2025.
Backed by Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) leader George Simion and Young People's Party (POT) president Anamaria Gavrila, Georgescu announced his candidacy with 324,000 signatures.
The Central Electoral Bureau later announced that it had registered Calin Georgescu's candidacy proposal.
Meanwhile, Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan also filed his presidential bid, backed by the People's Movement Party (PMP) and Right Force. Another candidate, Crin Antonescu, representing the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition, is expected to submit his presidential candidacy on Sunday. Enditem
