UNITED NATIONS -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday strongly condemned all violence and called for an end to hostilities after the latest escalation killed at least 237 people in Syria.

Guterres is concerned about the recent clashes in Syria's coastal areas, including reports of extrajudicial killings and civilian casualties, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, said during a daily briefing. (UN-Syria)

LOS ANGELES -- The causes of the deaths of the two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman and his wife were revealed by authorities on Friday, more than a week after the couple were found dead at their home in U.S. state of New Mexico.

Hackman, 95, died due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributory factor, Dr. Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, said at a news conference at the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office. KHARTOUM -- At least 92 people have died from cholera in Sudan's White Nile State over the past two weeks, the non-governmental medical aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced on Friday.

From Feb. 20 to March 5, "a total of 2,718 cases have been admitted to the Ministry of Health cholera treatment center at Kosti Teaching Hospital, supported by the MSF," the group said in a statement. (Sudan-White Nile State-Cholera Outbreak)

ATHENS -- The Greek government survived on Friday a censure motion tabled by the opposition over a deadly train accident two years ago.
