KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Police have destroyed poppy farms on 13 acres of land in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, provincial police spokesman Mullah Assadullah Jamshid said Saturday.
During an anti-drug campaign which was launched in Miwand district recently, the police smashed the poppy farms and detained a handful of persons for involvement in the illegal drug business, the official said without giving the exact figure of those arrested.
Afghan police won't allow anyone to cultivate poppy or produce and traffic drugs in the province, the official asserted.
In similar operations, police discovered a huge quantity of illegal drugs, including 15 kg heroin, in Kandahar province several days ago.
The Afghan interim government, which has outlawed poppy cultivation, drug production and drug trafficking, has vowed to fight the drug menace until the once poppy-growing Afghanistan becomes a drug-free nation. Enditem
