NEW DELHI, March 9 (Xinhua) -- One worker was killed and six others injured after a factory building collapsed in the northern Indian state of Punjab, police said Sunday.

Two workers were feared trapped under the debris.

The multi-storey building of the textile factory collapsed late Saturday evening in Ludhina district, about 154 km southeast of Amritsar, the Sikh holy city of Punjab.

Witnesses told police that 29 workers were present in the factory at the time of its collapse.

"We were told a repair work was being undertaken in the factory when a pillar gave way suddenly, leading to the collapse of the whole structure," a police officer said. "A blast in the building was also heard during its collapse."

Rescue work has been going on since last evening.

The administration has directed the local civic department to investigate the reason behind the collapse and submit a detailed report. Enditem
