TOKYO, March 9 (Xinhua) -- A massive wildfire in the northeastern Japanese prefecture of Iwate was declared contained on Sunday after damaging at least 210 buildings, according to the local government.
"Based on aerial reconnaissance, we have determined that there is no risk of the fire spreading further," said Kiyoshi Fuchigami, mayor of the wildfire-hit city of Ofunato in the prefecture.
The fire, which broke out on Feb. 26, has engulfed about 2,900 hectares, or 9 percent, of the city. As of noon Sunday, the damage included 102 homes, 76 of which were completely destroyed, and 108 non-residential buildings such as offices.
On the day, Ofunato officials also lifted the evacuation order for a total of 882 people from 361 households in four districts.
"Moving forward, we will focus on supporting the victims and staying alert to ensure the fire is fully extinguished," Fuchigami added.
Evacuation orders still in effect for 2,424 people across 979 households in Ofunato are expected to be lifted by noon Monday, according to the city. Enditem
