NEW DELHI, March 9 (Xinhua) -- At least four laborers died of suffocation and one fell unconscious Sunday while cleaning an underground water tank in India's financial capital city of Mumbai, civic officials said.

According to the city's civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident took place in the afternoon when five laborers entered the tank to clean it in Nagpada area of the city.

The fire brigade was alerted after all laborers fell unconscious inside the tank, said a BMC official.

"Of the five, four were declared brought dead and the fifth one was hospitalized and is undergoing treatment there," the official said.

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the deaths. Enditem
