TEHRAN, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Iran's mission to the United Nations said on Sunday that negotiations to dismantle its peaceful nuclear program "will never take place."
In a statement on social media platform X, the mission said Iran might consider discussions to address concerns over the potential militarization of its nuclear activities but ruled out any talks aimed at eliminating its civilian nuclear program.
U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox Business Network in an interview aired Friday that he wanted to negotiate with Iran on the nuclear issue and had sent a letter to Iranian leaders. Iran's UN mission said on Friday it had not received such a letter.
Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with world powers in 2015, agreeing to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The United States withdrew from the pact in 2018 under Trump and reimposed sanctions, prompting Iran to scale back its commitments.
Efforts to revive the deal have made little progress. Iranian officials have repeatedly said Tehran will not negotiate under pressure or sanctions. Enditem
