KAMPALA, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Uganda coach Paul Put on Monday named his squad ahead of two crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier matches.

Uganda, also known as The Uganda Cranes, is fifth in Group G of African qualifiers and will face Mozambique away on March 20 and host Guinea at the Mandela Stadium in Kampala days later.

"We need to prepare well because our target is to collect maximum points in the next two matches. We have selected players who have been busy with their teams," said Put.

The head coach included experienced players like the captain Khalid Aucho who plies his trade with Young Africans S.C. in the Tanzania Premier League, Awany Timothy (F.C. Ashdod, Israel) and Isaac Muleme (FK Viktoria Zizkov, Czech Republic).

Put has also invited English based Sibbick Toby for the first time. The defender features for English Football League One side, Wigan Athletic FC.

Uganda Cranes started its FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Guinea but picked a 1-0 win against Somalia in the second match. They registered a 1-0 victory against Botswana but fell 2-1 to former African champion Algeria.

The winners in the nine groups in Africa will directly qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, and the runners-up could potentially compete in the second round for the inter-confederation play-offs. Enditem
