NEW DELHI, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers have recovered one body from the debris inside a collapsed tunnel in the southern Indian state of Telangana, officials said Monday.
The body was extricated Sunday night after being found trapped in a machine inside the collapsed portion of the tunnel.
Authorities have identified it as Gurpreet Singh, a tunnel-boring machine operator working for a construction company.
Singh was one of the eight men trapped on Feb. 22 after a portion of Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel collapsed near Domalapenta in Nagarkurnool district, about 207 km south of Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana.
Singh's body was found on the 16th day of the search operation.
According to officials, 50 people were inside the tunnel at the time of its collapse. While 42 survived by rushing out immediately, eight who were believed to be at the bottom end at that time could not come out.
Of the remaining seven trapped people, four are laborers while three others are employees of the construction company. Enditem
