BUCHAREST, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Romania's Constitutional Court will rule Tuesday on an appeal by former presidential front-runner Calin Georgescu against the Central Electoral Bureau's (BEC) decision to bar him from the May presidential election.
Georgescu, a leading figure in the country's previous presidential race, whose candidacy was rejected by BEC on Sunday, denounced the decision as "abusive" and part of a broader political crackdown.
His supporter party, the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), has called for "peaceful demonstrations" and warned of economic consequences if unrest escalates.
Protests erupted outside the BEC headquarters following the announcement, leaving 13 gendarmes injured and leading to multiple arrests. Authorities reported vandalized storefronts and a damaged television station vehicle.
If the court upholds the BEC ruling, Georgescu will be definitively excluded from the race.
Georgescu, who advanced to the runoff in Romania's last presidential race, submitted his candidacy on Friday after the Constitutional Court annulled last year's presidential election results.
However, he was indicted on multiple charges last week and placed under judicial control, requiring him to report to authorities regularly.
The ruling coalition has scheduled the first round of the new presidential elections for May 4, 2025, with a potential runoff on May 18, 2025. Enditem
