LONDON, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Suspended British lawmaker Mike Amesbury on Monday told the BBC he will stand down as a Member of Parliament (MP), which will trigger the first by-election of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government.
Amesbury was suspended from the party after a video surfaced online in October 2024, showing him punching a constituent. Last month, he was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail for assault.
He told the BBC that he plans to resign "as soon as possible" and that he regrets attacking the man "every moment, every day."
His resignation will prompt a by-election for the parliamentary seat in Runcorn and Helsby, England. Enditem
