SINGAPORE, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Singapore has updated its electoral boundaries for the upcoming general election, with changes primarily driven by shifts in the number of electors due to population movements and new housing developments.
The 2025 general election will feature 33 electoral divisions represented by 97 Members of Parliament (MPs), an increase from 93 MPs across 31 divisions in the 2020 election, according to a report by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee on Tuesday.
As of Feb. 1, Singapore had 2,753,226 registered electors, an increase of 101,791 from 2020. However, the report noted that the growth was "not evenly distributed" across electoral divisions, as some areas experienced higher growth due to population shifts and new housing developments.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong convened the committee in January as part of necessary preparations for the upcoming general election. The committee assessed the current electoral divisions and submitted its recommendations to Wong recently. The government has accepted the proposed changes, which will take effect in the next election.
Wong will lead the ruling People's Action Party into the general election, which must be held by November 2025. The exact election date has yet to be announced. Enditem
