COLOMBO, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved a proposal to allow several ministries and institutions to recruit over 5,800 people to fill existing vacancies, cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa announced at a press briefing on Tuesday.
The largest beneficiaries of this initiative include the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
In total, the cabinet has authorized the recruitment of 5,882 new employees.
Last month, the cabinet also approved the hiring of nearly 7,500 people across various government institutions to fill existing vacancies.
Government sector hiring was frozen following Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis, leaving many positions unfilled. The government is now prioritizing recruitment for essential roles. Enditem
