ISLAMABAD, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched the country's first dematerialized digital identity card, marking a major leap in the national identity system, said a statement from the authority.

In a statement posted on its website Tuesday, NADRA said the digital identity card is expected to transform how citizens access government services. The feature will soon be integrated into a special mobile application called Pak ID, allowing citizens to store their identity cards on their smartphones.

"With the launch of this feature in the Pak ID app, citizens will no longer need to carry physical ID cards. Moreover, digital verification systems will soon be implemented to facilitate authentication for various services," the statement said.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi described the digital identity card as a crucial step toward digital transformation, highlighting the upcoming digital verification system to be implemented under the Digital Economy Project.

The minister also emphasized NADRA's role in extending identity services to remote areas and overseas Pakistanis while supporting law enforcement agencies in national security efforts.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised NADRA's pivotal role in empowering citizens.

Acknowledging NADRA's achievements in data integration and AI modeling, the prime minister underscored the significance of digital solutions in driving economic growth and promoting inclusiveness. Enditem
