DAR ES SALAAM, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian health authorities on Monday confirmed two cases of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, a viral disease caused by an orthopoxvirus called monkeypox virus.

Minister of Health Jenista Mhagama made the announcement following the isolation of two individuals suspected of having contracted the viral disease.

A statement by the Ministry of Health said one of the suspected cases involved a truck driver who traveled from a neighboring country to Dar es Salaam, adding that samples were sent to the national laboratory for testing, and the lab confirmed on Sunday that both individuals were infected with the mpox virus.

The ministry, in cooperation with the President's Office responsible for regional administration and local government, continued to monitor, investigate, and identify additional potential cases, said the statement.

The government is taking proactive steps to control the outbreak, using its experience in managing similar diseases, said the statement, adding that surveillance at borders is being strengthened and public health education efforts are underway to promote preventive measures.

Mpox spreads mainly through close contact with someone with the viral disease, causing a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever. It causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and a rash that can take weeks to clear. Enditem
