TOKYO, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port suffered a 4-1 away defeat to Yokohama F. Marinos of Japan in the round of 16 second leg of the 2024-2025 AFC Champions League Elite on Tuesday, and was eliminated from the campaign 1-5 on aggregate.
It is the two sides' third meeting this season, as Shanghai Port lost 2-0 to Yokohama in the group stage before a 1-0 home defeat in the first leg a week ago.
Yokohama took a dream start just two minutes into the game as it pounced on Xu Xin to win back the ball, before Daiya Tono finished with a low strike.
The home side doubled the lead in the 29th minute when Anderson Lopes broke into the box and chipped the goalkeeper Yan Junling.
Shanghai Port had pulled one goal back with Leonardo's header in the 35th minute, but Yan Matheus's goal before halftime helped Yokohama restore a two-goal cushion.
Anderson sealed the win for Yokohama in the 56th minute as he bagged a brace from a close range.
After the match, Shanghai Port's head coach Kevin Vincent Muscat acknowledged that conceding an early goal made the game much more difficult, and that three consecutive defeats to the same opponent highlights the gap between the two teams. He expressed hope that Shanghai Port can continue improving in the future. Enditem
