ALMATY, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan plans to increase oil exports via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu said on Tuesday.
Nurtleu made the remarks following talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Astana, Kazinform news agency reported.
In 2024, 1.4 million tons of Kazakh oil was transported through the BTC pipeline, and the country plans to increase the transit of Kazakh oil to 2.2 million tons per year, he said.
"The transportation of Kazakhstan's energy resources and the implementation of infrastructure projects through the Caspian Sea serve as an important link between the South Caucasus and Central Asia," he added.
Kazakhstan began exporting oil via the BTC pipeline in 2023 to diversify its export channels. In April 2023, KazMunayGas, Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company, and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan signed an agreement to transport 1.5 million tons of Kazakh oil annually through the pipeline.
