BUCHAREST, March 11, 2025 (Xinhua) -- Romania's Constitutional Court has rejected an appeal by Calin Georgescu against the Central Electoral Bureau's (BEC) decision to invalidate his candidacy for the May presidential elections, the official Agerpres news agency reported Tuesday evening.
The court's decision upheld the BEC ruling. Constitutional Court President Marian Enache confirmed that all appeals had been rejected, adding that a press release would follow with further details.
Georgescu, a former frontrunner in Romania's presidential race, had submitted his candidacy on Friday after the Constitutional Court in December annulled the results of last year's election.
The BEC on Sunday evening rejected Georgescu's candidacy, citing that he failed to meet the legal conditions for candidacy, referencing the Constitutional Court ruling last December.
With the court's ruling now final and binding, Georgescu will not appear on the ballot for the upcoming election.
The first round of the new presidential elections is scheduled for May 4, with a potential runoff on May 18. Enditem
