TEHRAN, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and his Belarusian counterpart Viktor Khrenin on Wednesday signed a document on expanding bilateral defense cooperation, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported.

The document was signed in a meeting between the two ministers in the Belarusian capital Minsk, in which the two sides also discussed security issues of common interest and ways to deepen bilateral ties and promote military cooperation, IRNA reported.

Nasirzadeh stressed the necessity to ensure regional peace and stability, promote defense diplomacy, and enhance bilateral defense cooperation in countering common threats and fighting unilateralism by using the capacities of international organizations, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, of which both countries are member states.

Nasirzadeh described the signing of the cooperation document as an "effective step" towards strengthening defense and security interactions between Tehran and Minsk.

Khrenin, for his part, underscored the need to continue bilateral defense cooperation to ensure sustainable security, IRNA reported.

Nasirzadeh arrived at Minsk on Tuesday to meet with Belarusian officials, and discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in different fields, such as the areas of defense and technical exchanges. Enditem
