BERLIN, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Julian Nagelsmann's recent call-up has marked an unexpected turning point for Leon Goretzka after a difficult few months.

The Bayern Munich midfielder, who had been widely written off, is back in the Germany national team for the first time in 16 months, and is set to compete in the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals against Italy on March 20 and 23. German media have called his return "the comeback of the year."

Germany head coach Nagelsmann has remained committed to a performance-based selection approach, which is evident in his squad choices. Alongside Goretzka, he has included Mainz forward Nadiem Amiri, who has just five caps, as well as Jonathan Burkardt and Inter Milan defender Yann Bisseck.

With key players such as Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz, Arsenal's Kai Havertz and Bayern's Aleksandr Pavlovic sidelined due to injuries, Goretzka's return is particularly noteworthy.

Once considered a candidate for transfer ahead of the 2024-25 season, the former Schalke midfielder turned down offers and refused Bayern's assistance in finding a new club.

"Leon has fought back from hard times, has developed despite his experience and has taken on an important role at his club," Nagelsmann said of the midfielder, who was left out of Germany's squad for the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

After months of remaining silent - believing that "words wouldn't have changed my situation" - Goretzka met with Nagelsmann for a discussion following his return as a regular starter at Bayern.

Despite past successes, he stayed quiet and focused on training, working his way back into the team. Step by step, he reclaimed his place in Bayern's midfield alongside Joshua Kimmich, who on Thursday announced his contract extension with the club until 2029.

Goretzka has spoken positively about his working relationship with Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, and his seven starts in 10 Champions League matches this season highlight his resurgence.

While reports suggest Bayern is looking to cut salary costs, Kompany has praised Goretzka's response to adversity. "He gave his answer on the pitch after going through difficult times," Kompany said.

The Bayern coach is reportedly hoping for a shift in the club's leadership structure, while Goretzka remains under contract until 2026. Enditem
