JAKARTA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government aims to generate up to 36.3 trillion rupiah (about 2.22 billion U.S. dollars) in shopping transactions ahead of Eid al-Fitr through a nationwide discount event, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs said Friday.

The Shopping in Indonesia Only (BINA) promotion, offering up to 70 percent off and running from Friday to March 30, takes place across 80,000 retail businesses and 402 shopping malls nationwide.

"Our domestic market is substantial, contributing 52 percent of the economy, and we must sustain its momentum," said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto during the program's launch.

Held quarterly, the BINA seeks to enhance public purchasing power, promote locally made products, and stimulate national economic growth.

Airlangga highlighted Indonesia's significant potential, particularly in Jakarta, due to its high per capita income and globally competitive retail and culinary sectors.

He also expressed confidence that the event would attract not only domestic tourists but also international visitors from Southeast Asia. Enditem
