LJUBLJANA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- There is a great danger of snow avalanches in the Slovenian mountains and flooding in lowlands, the Slovenian Environmental Agency (ARSO) said on Friday.
"Today evening, overnight and tomorrow morning rainfall will be strong," ARSO warned on its webpage, adding that rivers across the country could start flooding.
According to the national news agency STA, a meter of fresh snow has fallen in some of Slovenia's highest mountains over the past hours while further 50 centimeters of snow could be expected there in the coming days, creating conditions for possible avalanches.
Northern Slovenia boasts several mountain ranges which reach up to 2,864 meters high.
Heavy snow in the mountains and heavy rain in the rest of Slovenia, which has started earlier on Friday, is expected to continue until Sunday.
No casualties have been reported so far.
Due to climate changes, Slovenia has been experiencing an increase of extreme weather conditions in the past years and suffered from record floods in August 2023, which killed six people. Enditem
