HOUSTON, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Five people, including a child and an infant, were killed after 17 vehicles crashed on Thursday night in Austin, the capital city of the south central U.S. state of Texas, authorities said on Friday.

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) said the crash involved a semi-truck and 17 people in total, five of whom dead at the scene.

At least 11 people were injured and taken to local hospitals, according to the Austin Police Department.

Among the injured, one child and four adults are in life-threatening condition, ATCEMS said.

"This incident was incredibly chaotic and it was spread out over about a tenth of a mile," ATCEMS Captain Christa Stedman said.

An Austin Police Department spokesperson said at a news conference on Friday that so far it's not clear what or who caused the crash. Enditem
